In 2010, the mother of my children moved herself and my three boys from Georgia to Wisconsin. We were not married and I had not legitimized my children – I had no legal rights to my boys. I was lost, scared, and unsure what steps to take to ensure my participation in their lives. I started researching lawyers. I wanted a concrete setup to ensure my boys would live happy, healthy lives and that I would remain a large part of that. After sifting through attorneys that were more interested in their retainer fee than the livelihood of my children, I found Abbott & Abbott, PC. I arrived at my consultation very skeptical because of my previous experiences. However, my first interaction with Parri was extremely informative and reassuring. She was honest and upfront about my chances of reaching my goal (fulltime custody of all three of my boys) – most likely, I would be looking at joint-custody. Parri spent time hearing my story, understanding the complete picture of the situation, and listening to all my concerns – all before I had even paid the retaining fee! For my first meeting with Mr. BJ Abbott, I gathered all the information I had on my current situation – photos, letters, Facebook content, character references, and the information I had on where my boys might be in Wisconsin. I had spent a significant amount of time researching child custody laws, parental rights, and I had my own ideas on what the best course of action would be. I was very eager to share it. At our meeting, BJ patiently listened to me outline the history of my relationship with their mother, the history of her relationship with our children, and my brilliant plan for success. He acknowledged my passion for fatherhood, but also set me straight on what we needed to do. He had a much better, and way less expensive, plan of action. I was extremely impressed with his legal knowledge and his professionalism. However, I think I was most impressed by his humbleness and his very obvious desire to help me and help my children. During the planning phase of my case, after my legitimation process, I found out my children were in a precarious situation. I took my information to BJ & Parri. They acknowledged the severity of the situation and handled it with urgency and care. I was granted temporary custody of my boys until our custody case had been finalized. Again, I realized that Abbott & Abbott were on my side. More importantly, they truly had my children’s best interest at heart. For that, I will always be grateful. Immediately before our court date, I met with BJ a final few times. Each time, he patiently explained what would happen, answered my crazy questions, and reviewed the case with me. Each time I was blown away by how much he invested into my case. He knew the details, he knew the questions to ask. I was more confident than ever that I would gain full-time custody of my boys. The best part? I DID! I now have full-time custody of all three of my children. They are thriving – and I am truly grateful to Abbott & Abbott for helping me.
